Our faculty hosted the events organized in collaboration with the Women, Family, and Community Services Application and Research Center (KATUM) and the Turkish Red Crescent on the second day of the Children's University held between April 24-26, 2024.
The first event held at our faculty was the Science Fair held in the Science Laboratory. Coordinated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Naciye Somuncu Demir, Deputy Director of KATUM and faculty member of the Department of Science Education, and with the contributions of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Çapkınoğlu and Dr. Yunus Özyurt, 16 volunteer students from the 3rd and 4th grade teacher candidates participated in the science activities.
Twenty-one students from Canip Baysal Primary School, Kültür Primary School, and 50th Year İzzet Baysal Primary School participated in the Science Fair and conducted various experiments at 8 scientific stations.
Introduction to Science for Children: Learning by Touching, Observing, and Doing
In order to foster love for science and curiosity in scientific activities, children conducted experiments such as the oobleck experiment made with starch and water, the chameleon experiment made with sodium hydroxide and potassium permanganate, the Black Pharaoh (Fire Snake) experiment resulting from the combustion of baking soda and powdered sugar with gas oil, and the lava lamp experiment.
At the microscope stations, children observed cells of tissues such as algae, water towers, planaria, worms, and shark sections in histology, as well as tissues such as blood, stomach, brain membrane, and intestine; in botany, they observed some parts of plants such as onions, sunflowers, bean roots, and ferns. They conducted fun experiments at the STEM and robotics station. By recognizing live organisms such as inkfish, wrasse, catfish, scorpions in formaldehyde, and enriching our biodiversity by touching and observing, they learned about animals. The Science Fair ended with the Ivory Toothpaste experiment.
Later, the children met with the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Dr. Üzeyir Ok. After an enjoyable conversation on topics such as career, space, and dreams, the children were presented with booklets introducing the University's founder, the late İzzet Baysal, as well as children's books and stationery materials.
